Paine’s Company History
Paine’s Inc. was started in 1929, in the small community of Simsbury, CT just prior to the depression by Albert I. Paine and his wife Mary. The business was started to provide food scraps to the family farm during a time when every scrap mattered. Once the food scraps were picked up, they were cooked and then fed to the 200 or so pigs on the farm. This auspicious start is what helped the Paine Farm and the family survive the depression. With Albert’s need to provide for his family and the community he loved, he was able to see what people needed then and were going to need in the future. Thus Albert and Mary’s tireless efforts laid the foundation and principles that Paine’s stills relies on today.
In the early 1952 after Albert’s son Donald I Paine, completed his tour in the Marine Corp and graduated college at the University of Connecticut with a major in Agriculture and a minor in Economics, he and his wife Joyce joined his parents on the family farm full time. It was at this point they added the local home delivery of farm fresh eggs. Don knew that change was coming. New streets and homes were going up all over town so in the early 1960’s they decided to add the collection of residential home waste to the business on a full time basis. This continued for several years, all the while (his passion) farming was being phased out across the state. The writing was on the wall, some changes had to be made. So in the early 1970’s Don and Joyce made the most difficult decision in their career and moved the primary focus of the business from farming to the collection of residential and commercial rubbish with one truck. Their dedication, resourcefulness and endless motivation moved Paine’s not only forward but also to their current home in the town of East Granby. In 1986 again Don saw the world changing and Paine’s became the first company in New England to provide automated trash service to its customers. Soon after adding curbside recycling collection before it was even mandated by the state.
In 1989 Don’s sons, Mike Sr. and Russ took over the family business. Since that time, Paine’s has continued to grow in a consistent manner, never losing sight of their customers’ needs. Paine’s service area has also grown from the quaint Simsbury community to as far north as the Litchfield Hills and as far south as Rocky Hill. Currently, Paine’s services over 45,000 customers on a weekly basis using automated collection methods. Today, our services not only include residential trash and recycle removal, but also commercial services and roll-off containers. Paine’s is also the preferred hauler for several municipalities in our service area.
Today the management at Paine’s consists of third and fourth generation family members. The third is represented by Molly, Jean, and Mike Sr. and our fourth generation is represented by Julie. These “Generations” of knowledge and experience continue to provide Paine’s customers with the highest level of service that they deserve.
Paine’s Inc. has the same values that we’ve had since 1929;
